3 Falls Trail Run began in October 2012 with 116 trail runners taking on the challenge of the 18.6 km course. The trail race, situated in the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve in Kloof, KZN, has grown from strength to strength reaching its capacity of 350 trail runners annually. I was introduced to this trail in the past year. I have had the privilege of running/ hiking/ photographing the area and it is definitely worth a visit. It is also not for the faint-hearted. It is technical – which means that the surface is uneven underfoot – and some pretty steep climbs, to put it mildly. In 4 weeks time, I will be tackling this amazing 3 Falls Trail Run.

There is a little bit of everything! From steep ascents and descents, to gentle river runs, to waterfall fun and sneaking up to the local zebras! There is a new Krantzkloof Reserve Map as well as Trail descriptions for the different loops with distances, estimated time and level of difficulty.

If you haven’t visited Krantzkloof, and especially if you live in the upper highway surrounds, GO! You will not be disappointed.

There is a R40 entrance fee for adults and R20 for children. Open all year around from 6 am until 6 pm. If you visit regularly look into buying the Rhino card which is Krantzkloof and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Reserves card.

If you have been to the gorge, what is your favourite trail route and why? Comment below. I like the beacon trail as the views are spectacular and fun running on the path.
