How did you start Trail Running?

In 2007 I was offered an entry into the Rhodes event that was apparently difficult to enter as there was a long waiting list. I thought it was a road run in Grahamstown at the Rhodes University. Only later did I hear that it was a trail run at a little town called Rhodes where temperatures drop to well into freezing. I bit the bullet and did it enjoying every minute of the 50 kms. A year later, 2008 I finished the gruelling Cape Oddesy 5 day multistage event and became totally sold and obsessed.

What is your favourite trail race and why?

The Zini multi-stage Trail in Mntunzini. The two day event offers a variety of terrain and an interesting series of trails with some beach and bush.

Favourite food/ snack during your trail runs?

Jelly babies and coke or Powerade

Tell us a bit about yourself outside of running

I am a financial advisor, a bee keeper, a Harley Davidson and BMW biker. I get involved in Community Police Forums and love gardening. In my spare time I enjoy wood work.

What is the most memorable time on the trail?

After seeing pictures of the Mweni Trail west of Bergville I vowed to enter this beautiful 40 km run. When I finally entered and started the run an almighty snow storm began and left us ankle deep in snow. At the end of the day I saw no beauty; just snow plus lucky to be alive. I will have to return when the sun is shining.
